Automatic space insertion fails when top replying to emails in gmail

Bug Description

Steps to reproduce

 1) Reply to an email in gmail

 2) Type a sentence above the quoted text and press full stop

 3) Enter another word and press space

Expected result

 A space is entered after the new word

Actual result

 No space is entered.
