Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

todays (sept 11) dist-upgrade on 7.10 tribe 5 updated last yesterday (10 sept) was on my machine a partial upgrade
(i do not understand why and it would be a nice idea to indicate what the reason for the partial upgrade is. this would allow users to de-install software they do not use, but blocks the update)

the dist-upgrade did open a window and the completion bar went all the way to the right - but then stalled and nothing further happens.
no error message, nothing.
if i return to the window - it is grey except for the title bar.

i did restart the system and did run the update manager a second time - same effect.
what can i do to correct this?

Thanks for your bugreport.

Can you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/* to this report?

Thanks,

I have the same problem. I just tried to upgrade 7.10 with a dist-upgrade, and it offered to do a partial upgrade which failed with 'could not calculate the upgrade' message, citing to report a bug against the 'update-manager' package and to include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report. Here they are:

I just removed some of the packages that were blocking the dist-upgrade, and it let me update one software package afterwards. System update will not offer the dist-upgrade even after rebooting. It mentioned before this that it was trying to update the Ubuntu-desktop. Where did that offer go? Thanks!

Not sure if this is the same problem others report here. After applying all
updates to 7.04, I upgraded to 7.10 via Synaptic. The package cfsd did not
upgrade and hung the process: I had to control-C to continue. The upgrade
then continued to the end but complained about two files having to do with
python, as I recall. The bug reported asked me to submit bug reports for
3 packages: cfsd and two others. The system did reboot and the booted
system identified itself as 7.10. However, the screen resolution remained
1024x768 (I'm using a Dell Inspiron 530 with the wide screen) and cfsd still
would not install even after removing it, so I reinstalled from the live disk
and now everything works OK. I did not know about this bug-reporting
process or I would have reported from the updated system; I suspect the
bug-report files are now deleted since I reformated the disk along the way.
Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Since I had this problem, I bought a larger hard drive and completely reinstalled Ubuntu. The problem has not arisen since then. So, the bug is dead for me. Thanks!
