It seems to be working right now, after several reboots the brightness controls always show up.

It looks like your system is reporting strange numbers for number of brightness levels. In first screen-shot (and attached lshal output), you can see that there is only *one* level reported, while second screen shot shows very large number of brightness levels. I would suspect this is problem of your HW (buggy BIOS?) or kernel/hal which is reporting wrong levels.

Similar problem (with excessive number of brightness levels) is also reported in bug 138956.

Just a thought. When I upgrade hal on my T61p, kde-guidance-powermanager looses the connection to the battery, and stops displaying battery information. Could something similar happen for the brightness levels after a hal upgrade?

Since there was a hal update today, I tried to see if it affected the powermanager in anyway, and that doesn't seem to be the case. So please disregard my previous comment.

Sure, HAL can break with every update. That doesn't say anything about how
likely it actually is.

Does restarting powermanager fix it, btw? It has problems picking up the DBus
connection when that one goes away.

Yes. Restarting the powermanager will make it discover the battery again.

Can anyone comment if this is still an issue in the latest Hardy Alpha release with hal version 0.5.10-5ubuntu8 ? Thanks.
