3) I should be able as admin to say just turn the machine off/release even while erasing disks.
4) upon releasing a node, maas triggers an erase disk operation. The system has three 3TB drives which will take a very long time to complete; Webgui will not allow me (even as admin) to release the node, or power it off while it is erasing. This effectively locks the machine away indefinitely.
Jason Hobbs shared a workaround.
1) mark node as broken
2) power off node outside of maas (ipmi commands)
3) edit node and use 'Check Now' to sync power state
4) mark node as fixed
Node is now ready.
