Bug Description

Since upgrading from trusty to vivid, it appears that smartd has started sending 'SMART error (FailedOpenDevice) detected' alert emails each time a USB external hard drive is attached and then removed (subject to it being attached long enough to be caught by smartd's polling period).

Disco is on 6.6 now, so this is presumed fixed in Disco.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, then the relevant procedure is documented here:

        https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

However, I'm not sure this bug would qualify under that policy, since this sounds like essentially a feature request for smartmontools to handle hotplug.

status: Confirmed → Fix Released
