/sbin/route returns "SIOCADDRT: No such process"

Bug Description
When trying to add a route, /sbin/route returns:
SIOCADDRT: No such process
When configuring Wifi on a laptop on Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD after manually enter IP, mask and gateway and type sudo /etc/init.
* reconfiguring network interfaces...
SIOCADDRT : No such process

Ok, that was my fault, an unacceptable route. But this error is not documented anywhere, and THIS looks like a bug :)
