Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

I have the same problem.

>>the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem
The only thing I've done the last time was the installation of scratchbox: http://www.scratchbox.org/
But I don't think that this is relevant for this bug.

>>the behavior you expected
I expected a normal login screen.

>>the behavior you actually encountered
The first thing I saw were the error messages as one can see in the attachment.
Afterwards I clicked on the 'Computer' symbol, changed to /usr/bin/, opened the xterm, started gconf-editor and saw that the whole configuration was deleted.
I compiled and started the wlan driver RT73_Linux_STA_Drv1.0.4.0 with the net interface rausb0 - because the standard driver of Ubuntu has never worked with my wlan device. Then I started Firefox to post a new bug report and saw that this bug already exists in this database.

$ LANGUAGE=C gconftool-2 --spawn

Sorry for my bad english, I like Ubuntu but if this bug can't be fixed I have to reinstall it or install Windows *hopefully not*

I'm not sure if anyone actually cares about this bug but I restored my configuration with this procedure:

cd /tmp/
mkdir disabled
sudo mv orbit-* disabled/
sudo mv gconfd-* disabled/
gconftool-2 --spawn
gconfd-1 #optional?
reboot

Now everything works fine.

I just upgrade my Ubuntu 7.10 (November 6) an i got this advertising:
El panel ha encontrado un problema mientras cargaba «OAFIID:Deskbar_Applet».

I just did

cd /tmp/
mkdir disabled
sudo mv orbit-* disabled/
sudo mv gconfd-* disabled/
gconftool-2 --spawn

Thanks for your comments. This does not appear to be a bug report as such. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise your question in the support tracker. http://launchpad.net/support

I think that these two bugs have in common the Ubuntu updating, and I think
it is problem of the gconf-editor configuration files from one version to
another

I was getting similar error messages in hardy 8.04.

Using "gconftool-2 --spawn" did not spawn a gconfd instance, gave the error message below.

I identified the problem by running "strace -fF gconftool --spawn 2> strace-output.txt"
It reports all system calls made by gconftool, and permissions on /tmp directory was the problem.

If you still encounter this error, you can also try running strace and attaching the output to this bug.
