Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz
Ubuntu Version: 7.10 64Bit

Evaluation: This is caused by the compiz reflection plugin. Disabling has been confirmed to fix this in various comments in this bug.

Warning: Bug Crashes System

In the latest Gutsy with all available updates, Applications will cause an entire system to lock up when an object is dragged within it.

Reproducible as Below:

1. Find an image, block of text; anything selectable.
2. Click and drag somewhere else inside the browser window. (Desktop drag untested.)
3. Let go of the mouse.
4. System will freeze except for the mouse. Only way out is to power off by button or (safer) holding Alt and SysRq/Print Screen and typing REISUB.

Bug seems to be caused by the Reflection plugin as reported by numerous users.
Possible correlation with Intel graphics cards

New tests show that this only happens with Compiz enabled. Adding compiz to affects.

I'm also seeing this, on a Dellbuntu Inspiron, intel graphics card. 32 bit gutsy. It's not just firefox, I've also reproduced the problem using epiphany. It's somewhat annoying. I couldn't see anything of interest in the kernel log, syslog etc.

i'm also getting this issue. also an intel card (i945). i believe just clicking and dragging on the desktop causes this as well!

I agree. I've had this in openoffice and rhythmbox as well.

I think that it might be the reflection plugin in compiz that is doing this. When I switch off reflection, everything seems to work. When I switch it back on again, the system freezes again.

I can confirm that! Switching off reflection evades the crash for me too.

RAD. turning off the reflection plugin fixes this for me as well.

Hi,
Thanks for your bug report and information reported.
Slight changes made to description to be clear to developers.
I have rejected the firefox report since this does not seem to be isolated to firefox as robbbbb and Leonard Broman.
It seems clear that the Reflection plugin is the cause of the bug, though it would also seem that this is isolated to intel graphics card - if users who have confirmed this bug could state their graphics card too this would be useful.

I am keeping this bug as Incomplete as we don't have crash dumps. These can be made using https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash Then I will be happy to confirm.

Thanks again,
Elliot

YES! Thanks a lot! Turning off reflection solved my problem completely! Gosh I hated it because it always happened when I was writing a paper!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Also, lowering priority since we don't have reflection enabled by default.

I'm typing this from hardy (though I compiled and installed my own version of compiz, since I wanted some of the unsupported plugins, so I can't say for certain that its working with the ubuntu compiz). I'm not observing the problem in firefox-3.0. firefox 2 was removed from my system in an earlier update.
