Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using Gutsy with Totem 2.20.0 and gstreamer 0.10.14.
No matter what video file I try to play, the image is shown in a distorted way,
so that it is square and people in movies look like eggheads.
I tried using totem-xine instead of totem-gstreamer, but that just makes it worse,
so that the videos are even more horizontally compressed and only about 2cm wide.
The same files play fine with Feisty's Totem, in Media Player Classic under Windows XP
or in VLC under Gutsy.

Thank you for your bug. What xorg videodriver do you use? Does changing the videosink to x11 in gstreamer-properties make it work correctly?

I am using the "intel" driver, at least this is what xorg.conf says:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller"
 Driver "intel"
 BusID "PCI:0:2:0"

Changing the default video output to X11 in gstreamer-properties doesn't make it work correctly.

Thanks for your help though.

Do you get the issue playing the file with "gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///path/to/video" or if you use the i810 video driver?

Dan (sureshot) wrote :

when I use the gst-launch command, I get a movie player window with no controls that starts with the described narrow, distorted image; but I can grab the window border and pull the window to a format where the aspect ratio is correct.
When I use the i810 video driver, the image distortion problem goes away.

another problem I just now saw when directly comparing vlc and totem:
totem shows the video in about half the original resolution. it really looks blocky.
I had that problem before, but don't know how to solve it.

second log file. this is the older one, I guess. hope this helps.
I just activated the "intel" driver for a few minutes now to produce these files for you.
I'm going back to i810 now, since the intel driver produces all sorts of weird problems for me. (huge font in the login name line at gdm login screen and so on..)

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the -intel driver. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to test the new -intel driver using the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
Thanks.

A possible reason could be 4:3 resolution on your 16:10 screen. If it still doesn't work please attach the output of the command xrandr.

I have been using Hardy Heron now for 3 weeks or so. the problem persists. heavily distorted image in totem using intel driver and hilariously huge font in gdm login field. using i810 works fine for me.

I am using 1280x800 on this widescreen notebook.

xrandr output:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 1280
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 289mm x 21mm
   1280x800 60.1*+ 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
TV disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

going back to i810 now.

I guess it is the best to report it upstream but could you please check if it still happens with this unofficial package http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/hardy-i386/xserver-xorg-
video-intel_2.3.1-1ubuntu1~bwh3_i386.deb (AMD64 http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/hardy-amd64/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.3.1-1ubuntu1~bwh3_amd64.deb) of a newer -intel driver.

To install it you have to remove the old i810 driver before.
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-i810 xserver-xorg-video-all

And please regenerate your xorg.conf just to be sure.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

If you want to reset everything do the follow commands.
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-all

If it still happens with the newer driver attach a current /var/log/Xorg.0.log after playing a video file.

I have the same computer, a compaq nx7400, and the same problem with intel driver...the problem persist if I use the testing driver that unggnu said.

the only way to solve it is using the obsolete i810 driver....

anyone has a better solution??

Could someone please recheck this issue with Hardy 8.04.1 Live CD. Maybe it is only a configuration issue. If not please provide a current /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of >>xrandr --verbose<<.

and my xrandr --verbose !

ummmh for example the mplayer take a normal resolution with videos...it's seem a gstreamer problem with the driver, because with the i810 it works perfect

also, the fonts in some aplications like google earth are enormous, but again with the i810 they work

I dont know if can be important...I am running in 64 bits

I've finaly found a solution!!

in the launchpad bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/151311

copy&paste of xhantt:

Other solution is to add the line

Option "DDC" "No"

to intel Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
