xorg + compiz randomly freezes completely

Bug Description
Ubuntu gusty updated at 30/9 installed on a IBM/Lenovo t43p, video card ATI mobility fire GL v3200, xorg default driver: if i enable compiz/fusion using the appearance prefs pane everything seems fine, but randomly after some time (from 30 minutes to several hours) Xorg completely freezes; i can move the mouse cursor, but the system is completely un-responsive to mouse click and keyboard. The only way out is shutting down the pc the "hard way" (press the power button for more than 5 seconds). How can i help debugging this problem ?
