$ sudo reload autofs
reload: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused

Note that the config files mentioned above (auto.master and auto.nfs) work just fine on a separate computer running Ubuntu 14.10. They were generated using these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Autofs
