Missing shutdown button in xfce

Applications->Quit offers me a choice of options to leave the environment, such as log out, switch users, restart, poweroff etc. Is this not available on yours?

No. It's probably related to the locale setting:

Menu entries:

* desktop menu (greyed out)
* run program
* terminal
* file manager
* mozilla (web browser)
* settings
* multimedia
* network
* system
* tools (?)
* help

On mine, instead of help it's quit, can you make sure they just haven't screwed that up.

There are extra menu.xml.LOCALE files currently shipped in
mythbuntu-default-settings. Looks like we'll just need to blow those away?

"help" will open up firefox (giving a 404, but hey)

In theory this should be fixed by the new version of m-d-s. There may be an issue now however with unlocalized translations of the menu. If so, please report it in another bug.
