Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

When my printer is first detected with system-config-printer the following DeviceURI is set in my printers.conf file:

DeviceURI hp:/usb/Officejet_5600_series?serial=CN63NDE3XK04CY

However, nothing ever prints when I use the hp backend. The jobs stay in an Active state but nothing ever happens. I have worked around this issue by clicking on "Change" in the Device URI row in system-config-printer and changing the device to the USB connected device. The new DeviceURI looks like:

DeviceURI usb://HP/Officejet%205600%20series?serial=CN63NDE3XK04CY

When I was trying to troubleshoot this I set the cups log level to debug and did not find anything informative in the error log.

I can confirm this with an HP LaserJet 1320. In my syslog output I see:

Oct 2 16:55:01 clam hp_LaserJet_1320_series?serial=XXXXXXXXXXXX: io/hpmud/musb.c 549: invalid product id string: Operation not permitted
Oct 2 16:55:01 clam hp_LaserJet_1320_series?serial=XXXXXXXXXXXX: io/hpmud/musb.c 1003: unable to open hp:/usb/hp_LaserJet_1320_series?serial=XXXXXXXXXXXX
Oct 2 16:55:01 clam hp_LaserJet_1320_series?serial=XXXXXXXXXXXX: INFO: open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds...

(Additionally, this printer's recommended driver is raw PS, so I would have expected it to be detected with the usb:// prefix -- which does work for it.)

Looking in /var/log/syslog I see the same error messages regarding io/hpmud/musb.c .

This seems to be a duplicate of bug 147369 which I didn't find since it was invalid for system-config-printer.
