Bug Description

I tried to install Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Beta via alternative CD for i386.
I format my system manually. Then I create some encrypted volumes (dmcrypt). The first one I'd like to be driven with random passphrase so I choose this option, the others are with passphrase. Also I don't want to wait and do not let them erase existing data.
When preparing to configure the encryption (as it formats the given partitions) it hangs with "Please wait...". The characters on the screen are replaced by vertical lines displaying only the first half of each character, the other half is black. As I type ALT + F1 the displayed characters are ok, but nothing happens.
When I do this without random passphrases but with given passphrases it works!

I can confirm this bug with the Gutsy Gibbon RC1 alternate installer. In addition to the issues mentioned above, the installer also falls back to English. It is possible to switch consoles. I think this bugreport belongs to debian-installer therefore i will link it.

Confirmed on Ubuntu 7.10 release. Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot the alternate installer CD
2. Select manual partitioning
3. Mark a partition for use as "physical volume for encryption"
4. Change encryption key from "passphrase" to "random key"
5. Try to configure the encrypted volumes
6. Watch it dying

I can confirm this using the 7.10 release as well.

If you hop over to a terminal and do a ps -ef it looks like the hanging process is

/bin/sh -e /lib/partman/init.d/35dump

It looks like a viable workaround is to leave space for encrypted swap and set it up after the installation--though I have not actually finished this yet.

I've get the same error with Gutsy (Final) Alternate CD.

When I select Automatic partitioning with encryption, all works OK,
but when I manually setup the partitions and select a random password (for swap), I always get a hang of the installer "Starting/loading partitioner 54%".

Same for me with the Gusty Alt Install CD for x86 (Final)

Hangs just like the above screen shot when I try to use passphrase for my root fs and random key for my swap.

Confirmed with Hardy daily-build 20080211. As far as I can tell the workaround suggested by Matt Behrens works. I already have tested it when I first encountered the bug.

I forgot to mention that although the issue persists, the screen isn't torn anymore, i.e. the stripes, which you can see on the screenshot provided by bugmenot, disappeared.

Confirmed with the 8.04 alternate i386 official CD. The installer exits after successful generation of the random key and then hangs when restarted at the partman stage (see image).
Looks like it works with Intrepid daily 20080630 though, but better fix Hardy installer first...

If you eill use the random password partition for swap, a possible temporary workaround is the one reported by JosephWolf here. ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-md/+bug/154502/comments/5 )
It consists in creating the partition with passphrase and then make it to autoload on startup by script.
