Bug Description

I have VIA Rhine-based ethernet 10/100 card and Siemens SE515 ADSL modem/router.
In Ubuntu, I simply configure eth1 (because I also have another ethernet card
for LAN) connection to get assigned by DHCP and everything works (that is, I
enter Firefox and I can load any web address).
In Kubuntu, I configure the network, but I can't load anything other than my
router's configuration page. I tried almost anything I could think of, and
Konqueror always displays "Unknown host" or something similar.
I even tried disabling eth0, didn't help.
My gateway is 192.168.1.1 (address of my router) and the card selected on that
configuration page is eth1.

I suppose this belongs ot libkdenetwork2, but I'm not sure.

do you get any DNS servers over DHCP? They should "land" in /etc/resolv.conf...

I had tremendous problems which were similar. I also use a router and wired
network setup. I kept getting Unknown Host and eventually gave up and moved to
Ubuntu. I installed that at a friend's house with a DNS server and all worked
well with my wireless and wired card. Upon returning home I now find that the
Internet won't work properly again; it will lookup the host and connect to it,
but will sit at 'Waiting for google.com' indefinitely. Refreshing the package
list, which was fine there, now only downloads a couple of files before hanging.
However, Pings work fine and the connection seems to resolve, so it doesn't look
to me like a DNS issue. Any ideas??
My Ubuntu Hardware Submission ID was: ab4d55311e734d27f3679e60a3ba8604

Everything works fine in Windows XP and this router setup worked perfectly when
using Mandrake 10 on a previous machine.

I have resolved this issue for me by lowering my MTU setting on my router - this
may be worth trying. I have posted Bug 18813 about my similar issue.

I have a similar problem, somebody asked about the dns: in my case it resets to the router's ip (10.0.0.2) some seconds after the conection is started, if I do a poff -a; pon dsl-provider it works again for some seconds.

I should add that I'm currently using Kubunto Breezy and have no problems, the problems are under Kubuntu Dapper (I don't know about Ubuntu).

One more thing. I'm not familiar to the bug fixing process, when does a bug get reported as confirmed?

A bug changes to confirmed when someone doing bug squashing is able to replicate the problem and starts working on it. i noticed you were not having this problem in Breezy but were having the problem in Dapper. Was that in one of the beta releases or a Flight build? If it was could you please upgrade to Dapper final release and try it.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Jonathan, the upgrade was made using the last candidate release before the final.

I can upgrade, but I'm afraid it will break my current instalation (That won't affect my user data, of course). Do you know of any way of "downgrading" if that happens? Or saving the names of my currently installed packages to reinstall?

Anyway, I'm willing to do the upgrade if that helps. Do you have any advise of how to obtain debug information, logs, etc in order to properly report bugs?

I'll do it this as soon as I can.
Thanks
