Bug Description
Binary package hint: gdm
The new gdm failsafe feature in Gutsy does not bring one to desktop, no matter if the default or correctly given hardware specs allow the desktop to be brought up. I on;y see it work once, and that was with the Fiesty kernel I was running 2.6.20. I'm now using the 2.6.22.13 kernel. Again I had to use the nvidia install script, as the restricted modules did not bring my nvidia 6200 up and running. I had to start in failsafe mode for my kernel, then start init runlevel 3. This starts gdm, and I had to drop to term, log in as root and kill X, which killed GDM. This allowed me to run the nvidia script, and reboot to have my desktop back. Love Gutsy thanks!

The failsafe mode is an xorg feature, not a gdm one, gdm only calls the script, reassigning
