Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When trying to modify my 4 desktops organisation in 2 rows, 2 columns, this seems to be possible but when clicking close button, nothing is happening. And the 4 desktops stay in 1 row.

I am just about to post another bug on this subject :
"Visual Effects could not been enabled. I am pretty sure it's again to be
blamed on the SIS video chipset... But as long as the error message is not
very explicit, I have some hope it could be another solvable problem..."

Indeed I have a SIS integrated video chipset and I can't enable the visual
effect.
I use the desktop switching using the mouse towards the edge of the adjacent
desktop, that's the only desktop effect I use.

Feel free to tell me if you need more information on my configuration...

That's really weird, does changing the number of workspace has any effect? Do you have any error to .xsession-errors about the applet?

The bug is still valid. I have re-installed ubunty (with a formatting of the

row without any possibility to change it...

Yes I can reproduce the same with another user. It thought it began with the
setup of brightside. But when I don't use it, neither does it work
correctly. It was quite unstable at some stage and the two rows
configuration was working from a reboot to another. But now it is completely
stable: I can't have the two rows whatever I do.

I'll try again with a new user, step by step, and see what happens, and
when...

I have the same problem.

My Ubuntu install is an upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10. (Currently on 7.10)

(The problem began shortly after installing Brightside, but persists after disabling/uninstalling it. The two might not be related.)

Changing the no. of rows option in gcon-editor (Workspace_Switcher Prefs) and/or the Preferences menu of the workspace switcher has no effect.

Update on the previous post:
(Sorry for the double post)

Uninstalling Brightside does, in fact, get rid of the problem. The bug is triggered by either an install of, or a running instance of Brightside.
I can now have as many rows as I need.

Package brightside is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

I haven't got brightside but I am experiencing the same issue. No multiple rows in workspaces.

Any news on this?

Hi
it's a compiz-related problem, cause it begins when I try to add
compiz-effect (even the weak ones) on desktop. If I disable effects
workspaces applet works well, if I enable effect the workspaces shows
spaces only in one rows.
I choose to disable desktop-effects and so now it works well.
Thx

I'm seeing the same behavior. I have 9 workspaces, and they all appear in one row in the switcher, despite me having "Show all workspaces in: 3 rows" set as a workspace switcher option.

I've confirmed that manually killing brightside, followed by modification of the workspace switcher option restores the row functionality. The same happens if I kill brightside, then remove and replace the workspace switcher. This is completely reproducible.

Just want to point out that the bug still persists in Hardy. I have two workspace switchers with settings to 6 workspaces in 2 rows. Reproducably, one of them changes settings to just 1 row after rebooting.
I can remove it from the panel and add again with new (=old) settings, but after rebooting or hibernating it goes back to 1 row.

I have upgraded from Dapper, where it was working fine.

I don't know which other info might be relevant, but I'm not using any desktop effects and brightside is not installed.

For information, a similar issue can happen if you are using several Workspace switcher applets. In that case, changing the number of rows of the additional Workspace switcher applets has no effect.
