I forgot, it's 7.10 beta up-to-date till right now.
By the way, i just close the lid and open it in 2 secs and get freeze again, i dont know what is really going on with this beta version.

I am seeing this too. There is also a comment at top of http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=587390&page=3 - I am testing this and seeing if it affects it or not.

I will update when I can (don't use this machine much with Ubuntu)

Hi, thanks for reporting. Can you reproduce this with the Hardy kernel (2.6.24)? Please attach the debugging info described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies

Hi. I was seeing something very similar to this bug (which is I think similar to #98668 which is itself a dup of #120347). Here's what I wrote on #98668 in case it's helpful to you also:

"I can verify that for me the issue was the deprecated i810 driver. I had upgraded from Feisty (where my laptop didn't suffer this problem) to Gutsy, but because I had manually changed xorg.conf a long while back (for an unrelated issue), Xorg continued to use the i810 driver.

Running:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

to automatically update my xorg.conf (as suggested in the file itself) straightened out my xorg setup and my computer hasn't exhibited the freezing behaviour since."

Hope it helps.

Thanks for you comments all of you.

I first tried what Micheal said but it didn't work at all, just reconfigure, closed the lid and got freeze again in 1 sec. Nevertheless, i tried what Ian commented and it looks like finally worked!!
I'm closing the lid, got inactive, screensaver active and blocked with no freezing anymore.

Just type:

echo 1 > /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS

And it's done!!
I'll keep you in touch if something like this come up again.

How do I install a Hardy kernel on my Gutsy machine without upgrading
to Hardy alpha/betas? If necessary just point me at a source code tree
as I am a kernel developer :-)

It has disappeared since I changed the settings in /proc/acpi/*/DOS
from 4. I was changing to 1 but I suspect that the kernel code changes
it to 0 actually.

Hi

I am running the BETA ( Hardy Heron ) and I have the same problem, still I am not able to solve it....

My machine is a IBM G40 and system is using the i810 driver

Any help?

...to be more specific:

Laptop: IBM G40
Distro: Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron ( beta version ) up to date

KERNEL : Linux gangotri 2.6.24-12-generic #1 SMP Wed Mar 12 23:01:54 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

DRIVER : VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)

I tried three diferent 'solutions' I found on different forums and no positive results:

When I close the lid of the laptop, system freezes and I have no option more than switch off the power and restart.... It also gets frozen when I 'suspend'

I was using the previous version of Ubuntu ( 7.10 ) and this problem was not happening...

...shoud I report a bug to the development team of Ubuntu 8 ?

My HP Compaq 6510b suffers from this issue as well. When the lid is closed, kernel error occurs: BUG: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference, which can be seen when switched to the console (ie Ctrl+Alt+F1).

I'm using kernel 2.6.22-14-generic, video driver "intel" (as seen in the attached xorg.conf).

Executing echo 1 > /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS doesn't do the trick for me, the freeze occurs again.

Actually, im having the same problem as well, didn't work the "echo 1 >
/proc/acpi/video/*/DOS" command, i thought it worked, but it did not. Hope
that new release fix this problem.

I've just upgraded to 8.04 and it seems to solve this issue. Maybe a new kernel would do the trick without upgrading to Hardy.

I have Hardy installed and has the same issue, what kernel do you have?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thanks for the post,

Yes I am confortable enjoying installing packages and sometimes compiling
then ... but I am on holidays now ... not with my laptop here... so I won´t
be able to try until I get back...

you will have the result of my test in about 3 or 4 weeks
