Bug Description

Binary package hint: blender

Just downloaded Ubuntu Gutsy Release Candidate. Just this day.
And I did a fresh install of Blender.

and I got this

rage@ragingmon:~$ blender
guessing 'blender-bin' == '/usr/bin/blender-bin'
Compiled with Python version 2.5.1.
Checking for installed Python... got it!
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
rage@ragingmon:~$

any help about this?

i can confirm this.
i upgraded from feisty because of the better external monitor support, and than blender totaly crashed the whole system. no terminals, no X restarting, no ctrl-alt-del working...afterwards i tryed the gutsy gibbon RC live CD and could successfully install blender on that, now i installed gutsy from that live cd and blender crashed with this messabe as above but fortunately the system doesn't freeze.
so if you really have to work with blender try to launch it from the live cd until you got this fixed.
i've got a "_usr_bin_blender-bin.1000.crash" file in the /var/crash directory. but it's 5.5 Mb. should i attach here?

Sounds very much like what I've been experiencing. (Bug # 150043) Ragingmon and rebegin, what video cards are in your machines?

hey eyemeansit,
i've opened another bug report connected to blender crash as i got an option from the crash notifier and it was automatically collected some info, and i could not connect those to this bug. so here's mine:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/blender/+bug/152197
check out that one too.
by the way i couldn't check yours (got this message, clicking on the link: Not allowed here. Sorry, you don't have permission to access this page. )
by the way i've got this card: ati mobility radeon 9000 IGP (in an acer travelmate 2200 laptop)
i'm running kubuntu 7.10.
sorry for my bad English.

Same problem with a Radeon IGP 330M/340M/350M.
If you disable dri by using libgl1-mesa-swx11 package, it works but much slower. The only version of blender i can run on the new ubuntu 7.10 is the mesa static version available on blender.org (2.44, 2.45 doesn't work)

Seems to be a trend...
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon IGP 330M/340M/350M

As Belcirelk wrote the 2.44 static version works (2.45 does not)

I got some problems with the stactic version, like a crash when i want to export my UV unwrap to a image. So, it's not a perfect solution. Yafray render crash too.

Another way to get blender working in ubuntu 7.10 is downgrading libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-glx to 6.5.1 like said here : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=417287. You can fin the .deb here : http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/libs/

I have the same problem neither 2.44, 2.45, 2.44-static or 2.45-static works on Ubuntu 7.10. I have a ATI Mobility Radeon M6 LY. I've tried Wings3d and it also crashes and things look horrible, so maybe it's a GL bug...

Hello! I confirm this bug. I can not start Blender at all. I use Compaq nc4000 with ATI Radeon IGP345M videocard, using open-source drivers (xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.195-1ubuntu2).
Нere is the short log in debugging mode of Blender:
Your problem is not problem, man. I can not even start Blender. I am thinking it is due my Compiz-Fusion, but I do not like to switch off effects.

Don't know if it's any help, but after wrestling with this bug for a while in my hp pavilion zv5000 with mobility radeon 9100 igp, I stumbled upon this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/AtiDriver.

It says "Try disabling DRI, by adding Option "DRI" "off" to the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf . If this helps, you have a DRI problem (...)".

Worked like a charm for me.

This is not a dup of 149273! It does not enter a respawn loop, it crashes out!
After looking at the responses here, I'm sure it is an ati driver issue.
