Desktop icons/background missing on startup, no right click on desktop

Bug Description

I am Re-filing this, as i have all the latest updates applied, have restarted, and the bug has not been fixed.

what's goin wrong:
On startup, background picture is missing, desktop icons also missing.
right click on desktop does nothing.

** also, when pref>appearance is opened, the background image appears for the rest of the session,
but is missing again on reboot.

Thanks for your report, Which version of Ubuntu do you use? Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu? Does that happens with a new user?

I have not tried it with a new user,
but im using Ubuntu Gutsy beta, with all updates as of this morning.
ill try a new user and get back to you.

okay, i tried to add a new user...

but now, the "users and groups" isnt in the admin menu, and the entry in help that refers to it is also missing...

this is pretty strange..

was the users and groups part changed for 7.10?

could my missing "users and groups" functionality be because i used gtkorphan?
i seem to remember it uninstalling the fast user switching package.
