Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Menus and text text are not displayed properly in Writer and Calc. This seems to happen at DPI 100 and font size 10. Other sizes make the problem go away. This is on up to date gutsy.

GPU: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

Not openoffice.org specifc. See attached from gnome-translate.

I am changing this to fontconfig just to get it away from openoffice.org, but I am not sure if fontconfig is the best place for it.

Worked with Arne Goetje and determined it was not fontconfig and probably the ati driver instead.

The problem goes away if I change the DPI to 96, but will come back if I use 100.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

It might be worth noting that I use a dual head setup with xrandr, but it makes no difference if the external monitor is hooked up to the laptop or not-- the laptop improperly renders the text at its native resolution of 1400x1050 when using 100dpi.

Thanks. I don't think this is the driver's fault. It is maybe the driver's fault that the real DPI is not detected from the screen, but the fonts should not end up like this anyway.

Does it change if you use 96DPI (default on hardy)? Please test hardy alpha2 as well.

Yes. I believe 96 is the default on Gutsy too as I did a fresh install
and didn't change my font settings and it was fine. There are no rendering
problems at 96dpi. This is still on gutsy.

I have to figure out how I am going to test on hardy...

I notice in the log that the dpi is getting set to this:

(**) RADEON(0): Display dimensions: (300, 230) mm
(**) RADEON(0): DPI set to (205, 115)

I just tried this on hardy, and everything works correctly. I checked Xorg.0.log and found:
(**) RADEON(0): DPI set to (96, 96)

I tried various DPIs and font sizes and everything is good now.
