Bug Description

os:Ubuntu Gutsy Latest updates as of12:20 AM mt time on 10/13/07
uname:Linux ion 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Wed Oct 10 06:00:47 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
System Specs:
3.0 ghz Pentium 4 Hyperthread
768 meg ram
HDD:plenty of space, specs/usb ports work perfectly for any other os..
USB ID: Bus 004 Device 003: ID 050d:705a Belkin Components
Problem in detail:
I am also unable to use the rt73: Belkin F5D7050 v 3002 with ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Beta, and The RC and all current updates. I am unable to connect to any wifi networks but I am able to scan. I have everything configured correctly and the same as feisty.. Note: Feisty did not work out of the box with the rt73 either... In Feisty I had to blacklist the ubuntu modules and run the http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/rt73-cvs-daily.tar.gz version of the driver to get wpa and wep to work properly. NOW in Gutsy wpa enabled causes a complete system lockup...
I noticed "wmaster0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-17-3F-C5-BF-91-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 " in ifconfig with wlan0 and I also noticed the rt73usb.ko driver loads up rt2x00 drivers which are uncompatible and is creating a driver conflict:
lsmod | grep rt shows that these two drivers are loading even though they are blacklisted in "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist"
rt2x00lib.ko
rt2x00usb.ko
I have blacklisted drivers because normally without any blacklists every ralink driver is loaded in "/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/wireless/rt2x00/" which is a big problem.... And hasnt been fixed for over a year...
Here are the results after I have actually renamed the conflicted drivers which seem to be a dependency of rt73usb:
WARNING: Could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00lib.ko': No such file or directory
WARNING: Could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00usb.ko': No such file or directory
FATAL: Error inserting rt73usb (/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/wireless/rt2x00/rt73usb.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
As u see rt73usb is depending on a conflicting driver that makes wmaster0 and wont allow connections with wlan0....
Note: Ubuntu rt73 drivers are flawed!
Note: I have reason to believe that 050d:705a usb id is loading up in other drivers which dont support the rt73 chipset.. someone overlooked it and has left it go for quite a while...
I will attach some logs if it helps, I and many other users are unable to take advantage of Ubuntu's Wireless capabilities because of this issue, it is greatly unforunate that this problem has not been resolved when other much crappier operating system's like pclinuxos runs rt73 out of the box...

I am willing to supply as much time and effort as needed to help resolve this issue. Please let me know what debug outputs and information is needed.

Well it seems Fedora and PcLinuxOS got it right, isnt Ubuntu supposed to be superior? I hope this issue is fixed for thousands of people that have actually spent there time posting bug reports for this issue...
Just a note:
Thousands of people dont care about how to manually fix it, they test out there live cd and say "!!!! it" and trash the cd, most people especially windows users wont spend the time and post a bug. People want this to work in Ubuntu and havnt seen a fix yet, why?

I personally love ubuntu, I hate asking questions, bugging dev's and complaining but I would like a developers point of view, progress report, and a yes or no if they can fix this problem and when. This problem has gone on since pre-feisty and has now imminently made it through the release of Gutsy. Isnt this a blueprint? What would Mark Shuttleworth think of this?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I'm sorry for the frustration with trying to resolve this bug, hopefully I can try to help push it along. I noticed with the bug#'s you referenced in your report that the majority of them didn't have the "Importance" set against the linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22 package it should be reported against. I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of bug #139070 and flip the importance of that bug to "High". Please continue to report any bugs you see. We greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
