(Clearly "score" in the first changelog entry should have been "mscore". Seems the bug wasn't closed by the upload; maybe due to it being in the second changelog entry.)

New versions will be uploaded to Debian, soon hopefully (though I am still seeking a sponsor), and from there will be synced into Ubuntu. I do not want duplication of work.

Ubuntu needs a *sf2-soundfonts-general-midi* package that could be then listed as a dependency for any music apps that use sf2 soundfonts (and maybe an *OPTIONAL* sf2-soundfonts-extra* packages). A lot of music apps, software synths, midi players either take advantage of, or *DEPEND* on sound fonts.

Isn't this the right way to proceed? We obviously don't want to package extra stuff with every music package that isn't part of the source distribution, and this way, we can find the few good sf2 general midi soundfonts that are free and appropriately licensed and package them up (or have someone create them, if they don't exist with the appropriate license), and we can put any additional soundfonts that are excellent quality into the "extras" package.

maybe install them in /usr/share/soundfonts and modify builds for any programs that use .sf2 files to find them there?

fluid-soundfont, presumably the first Free (GM/GS) soundfont, has just
been uploaded to Hardy. I will upload a new version of mScore when it
is accepted.

To "have someone create them" is going to be expensive, and very
unlikely. If they already existed, they would have been found. It is
very lucky that I found Fluid (and was able to get it appropriately
relicensed), though if you're stepping up to create Free soundfonts,
then that is very commendable.

This is what we will be pursuing; though the directory will be
/usr/share/sounds/sf2, in accordance with awesfx.

Hi,

rather than build your own binaries, I recommend you enable the
gutsy-backports repository, and install the mscore package. Note that
this will require you to install a SoundFont. Fluid is a Free GM/GS
soundfont, and the Debian unstable packages should install cleanly on
Gutsy. See [0]. I *do not recommend* that anybody installs packages
from external repositories, however; fluid is a special case as it
builds no binaries, installing only two files to
/usr/share/sounds/sf2.

Moreover, this is not a support channel. Please use the answer
tracker, forums, or open new bug reports in future. Thank you!

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is the " gutsy-backports repository"?
Is this the same as Synaptic Package Manager?

In any case, thanks for your advice.

"Backports" is the repository of software that is "backported" (ie,
wherein a new software package is built to run on an old release), but
it is only supported by the community, and does not receive the same
bugfixes or security updates that Canonical provides for main and
restricted. Nonetheless, if the backported package came from universe,
then that should be of no concern. (And mscore did).

You can enable it in the Software Sources
(System->Administration->Software Sources) applet: on my Ubuntu Hardy
system, I switch to the Updates tab and check the "Unsupported updates
(hardy-backports)" box. It might be different on Gutsy; I'm not sure.

Then, once you have enabled that, you can install the package "mscore"
in the normal way.

(But you'll still have to download your own SoundFont)

OK Thanks Toby.

That's something new that I have learned.
Interesting that you are running Hardy. I didn't think that had been
released yet.

I'm very grateful for you spending the time to help me.

It's a development release: it's available for you to run if you
really want, but is quite unstable, and I wouldn't recommend it unless
you've got developing to do :)
