I am using the official Ubuntu 7.10 and I stumbled on the same problem. There is no way that I can get the Xcursor Selector starting to do its job.

Nevermind, I just fixed it. Is this still an issue in Hardy?

I have not tried the Beta version of Ubuntu Hardy.
Actually I was waiting for an official release to test it. As soon as it´s
available I will test it and send you the results...

could you try to find out how exactly the application is called and what package provides it?

Dear Michael,

I am running 8.04 at this time and for changing the cursor types I use
"Change Background" utility started from the desktop, which works out fine.
The special program that I installed on my older 7.07 installation is no
longer of any use, I really can not tell you what it was called.
Sorry for this poor information and thank you for taking your time to look
at a problem.

not work in 8.04.

strange... never seen this one before... in ubuntu you can change pointers using
gnome-appearance-properties
then customize (button in the lower right), then pointer (rightmost tab). does this work?

Also in Intrepid Ibex gcursor doesn't work.

When I run it in console i get:

hacx@localhost:~$ gcursor

(gcursor:7107): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated

(gcursor:7107): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler 'extract_theme'.

(gcursor:7107): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler 'entry_selected'.

(gcursor:7107): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler 'size_changed'.

----------

GUI loads, but it seems it does no change to the cursor when I try to select any from the available list.

Also I tried to change cursor in Appearance - properties of Theme Human. That seems it changed something but only when I focus the cursor on some parts of GTK-based applications :-)

gcursor seems to be unmaintained / there is no one registered to receive bug mail for gcursor in launchpad. probably this should be fixed before fixing this bug...

Confirmed here. If this package is unmaintained, Canonical should provide a replacement.

Me as well. Running Ubuntu 8.10 on an HP pav. tx2000z. Would love to see this fixed, I have a cursor theme that I'd like to use!

This package is listed for inclusion in Lucid. It does nothing at all in Ub9.10Karmic except throw these:

(gcursor:6868): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated
(gcursor:6868): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler 'entry_selected'.
(gcursor:6868): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler 'open_theme_dir'.
(gcursor:6868): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler 'size_changed'.
(gcursor:6868): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler 'extract_theme'.

A quick glance didn't show this package as existing upstream (packages.debian.org), and man page says it was created for Ubuntu. The original dev appears to be active on Launchpad, but does not list gcursor as a related project.

The page: http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php/gcursor seems to have been a point page. The dev participated in the comment section, but the page hasn't been updated in years... since the current gcursor version was released in August of 2004.

Maybe this package should be put on notice to start the clock running on a new dev or dropping from the repos (or however we do this in Ubuntu community)?
