Bug Description

Hello,

I installed today Xubuntu gusty rc on my laptop from the Live CD. No pb for the live cd, bootsplash ok.

After reboot, grub tempo and then a black screen... I thought of an install pb but the hd was active... I waited one minute or two and then I saw the login screen.
It is not a real pb, the system starts but without bootsplash it is a bit disappointing.

The strange thing is that the boot with the live cd was right.

Hope it will helps...

Solved by doing the following changes:

- edit the file: /etc/usplash.conf

- change the resolution inside the conf file by mine (it was 1280x1024, i put 1024x768 (ok i have an old pc...))

- run: sudo update-initramfs -u

Correct after reboot.

Had similar problem after installing ubuntu 7.10, after install usplash did not load and the system wouldn't start. i erased quiet splash from the boot line on grub, and loaded the system. after that i did what you suggested and also reinstalled usplash and usplash-theme-ubuntu. now the system loads fine. i guess it's because i did what you suggested only my screen resolution is 1280x800, so i changed from 1280x1024 to 1280x800 in usplash.conf . this is a critical problem if it happens with other widescreen laptops like mine. (mine is toshiba).

I had slow slow boot time and no splash screen after installing ubuntu 7.10 on an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R51. The screen was black for at least 3 minutes before I got to the login screen. I followed the steps you outlined:

- edit the file: /etc/usplash.conf

- change the resolution inside the conf file by mine (it was 1280x1024, i put 1024x768 (ok i have an old pc...))

- run: sudo update-initramfs -u

Now it is working fine! Booting in around 35 seconds with the splash screen. Thanks a lot. I hope this works for others too!

I can confirm this also happens on a Thinkpad T43. Slow boot-up and black screen... Bu I can also confirm that this fix works! Exactly as said! Boot up really quick now, with a splash screen. Ace!

Tried the suggested fix on my XPS M1330 Dell Laptop with 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS.

I still have the same problem. Boot-up I see a flash of text about kernel and then screen is blank untili I can actually see the login screen.

== Some context:
- only way I could boot off LiveCD was to choose one of the alternative boot options in the menu with reduced graphics

Sorry I should note that,

- install with 32 bit version of Ubuntu was fine
- amd 64 version is what caused the trouble

- also I could not boot up 64 bit version until I turned off my wireless card and then updated through a wired connection, then turned on wireless card

The usplash.conf fix worked wonders on my Toshiba Satellite 1900-101 notebook with Kubuntu Gutsy where the splashscreen was not visible and bootup was a 4 minute crawl. In usplash.conf the set resolution was 1280x1024 while the notebook's native resolution is 1024x768.

Maybe updating the initrd fs is not even necessary because I could already see the shutdown splash screen as soon as I had edited usplash.conf and restarted.

I think the bootsplash resolution should default to something (nearly) every screen can reproduce - like 640x480.

I did exactly what Dante123 did and got excellent results

My laptop is a Sony Viao VGN-S1XP with 1ghz Ram and I am using Xubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) [ Kernel version is 2.6.22-14-generic ]

Before it was taking about 3 or 4 mins to boot into the login screen and I did not see the splash screen (black screen, but with hard disk activity)

Now the boot is taking about 30 seconds and I see the splash screen

Thanks to all for the information

Regards sapn :D

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu.

This particular bug has been already reported as bug 150930. It is caused by the Gutsy ubiquity installer which installs bad values in /etc/usplash.conf and it is currently fixed in the next ubuntu release. Therefore, I set this bug as a duplicate of bug 150930, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. You will probably find solutions and workaround for your problems by reading the contents of that bug report. Thanks to everybody who contributed to this bug.
