Bug Description

Did a fresh install from "gutsy-desktop-i386.iso" from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ on a Dell machine. For the record, the ISO was dated "15-Oct-2007 08:09", so I am guessing this is the latest as of the time I am filing this bug. I even tried to look for any newer packages using the "Update Manager" utility. None available, so I definitely have the latest set of packages.

The bug is that when I fire up the "Language Support" tool available under "System-->Administration", I only see the language I picked during install which was "English" under "Supported Languages". In prior Gutsy Tribe releases and even with Feisty, *all* the supported languages would show up under that section regardless of which and how many languages one installed. To install an additional language that was not already installed during install, one would simply check the box next to the language line in the "Supported Languages" section and the "Language Support" app would take care of installing that langauage and all it's dependencies. Very nifty! Only problem, it's brooke with this 10-15 build.

It is paramount that this feature work for Dell. Please investigate. I will be attaching a screenshot soon.

I just tried firing up "Update Manager" and it mysteriously went and fetched 55 updates. After the updates were complete, the "Language Support" tool now properly shows *all* the languages and when I pick some non-english language such as chinese, it goes ahead and gets all the packages it needs and I now have chinese on my system. Don't know what changed for this to suddenly work. Don't care honestly since it works now ;-)

Please close this bug.

Amit - did you have network connectivity when you initially installed? I think Ubiquity attempts to download the language packs if it can.

Changed in dell:
status: New → Invalid

I did have network connectivity but since there is no way to set a proxy during the install (need to file a feature request for that), all installs by default here in corp envt such as Dell behind a proxy will tend to not have network connectivity until user can login post os install and set it manually.

This issue can be left marked "invalid".

Changed in somerville:
status: New → Invalid
no longer affects: dell
