I made comment earlier that my install failed the pre-req requirements. I tried the upgrade button again and it seems to have word fine although it was terribly slow.

It seems to correct the problem for me (synaptic was using a local
server in Finland (that's where I am) by default) - now the upgrade
seems to proceed normally.

The system was unable to get the prerequisites for the upgrade. The upgrade will abort now and restore the original system state.

Please report this as a bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

no this doesn't help me. I am going to attempt to download the alternate install CD and follow the directions at the bottom of this page: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading as a workaround, I will post results.

Upgrade to 7.10 was successful after editing repository source list. Don´t know if this was coincidence or not.

I get past this point now, but get errors later. See Bug #155158.
A problem occured during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

Mine does the same after unsucsessfuly upgradeing i had to download the iso. still adept thinks i only have 7.04 and wants to up grade even tho i installed with the iso of 7.10 it wont download any thing, it wont update it just wont connect to any mirrors

Removing 'AllowUnauthenticated "true";' from my apt configuration helped me out.
Now the do-release-upgrade and graphical upgrade works for me.

I'm running 2 computers (Feisty Fawn 7.04) since a few months. On one computer (I call it 'server') I run apt-proxy configured to get updates from http://ftp.hosteurope.de/mirror/archive.ubuntu.com (but it doesn't matter which source I use as I tested several different sources). The second computer (I call it 'client') is using the apt-proxy of 'server'. I updated 'client' to Gutsy Gibbon using apt-proxy from 'server' last week. This was working fine without any trouble.

After feeling sure about the new distribution I tried to update 'server' today. It is configured to use it's own local apt-proxy. This system was always working fine before. But the update procedure on 'server' fails with the error message ("Getting update prerequisites failed").

I already reconfigured Synaptics to update the main branch only which did not solve the error.

Thanks Sam, but that doesn't work for me. I have tried it with three different ISPs, they all don't work. Plus, downloading the upgrade tool and noumerous information works very well before that dialog appears.

For me worked change the file "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-
sources.list" and change the server that wasn't responding to another one,
from:

    http://es.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports
main/debian-installer

to

    http://en.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports
main/debian-installer

With that no more problem, but now I don't have a local server in my
sources.list.

This means your /etc/apt/sources.list doesn't contain a valid source for the packets because "http://.archive.ubuntu.com" isn't a valid URL. Try "http://archive.ubuntu.com" instead (without the"." after "http://") or check http://www.ubuntu-nl.org/source-o-matic/ for a valid source near you.

I have the feeling that many mirrors are not fully up to date yet.

After changing the sources to http://archive.ubuntu.com and http://security.ubuntu.com the upgrade worked for me on all machines.
When my upgrade was finished I changed my sources.list back to ftp.hosteurope.de again. New updates arrive properly now.

I also happen to be in Spain as "SuperBrown" :-) is (note 'es.' in source list url) and so maybe there's a problem with that - although I tried 'main' and 'us' many times already.

I tried changing repositories, nothing works. I guess I'll just do a clean install of 7.10 since the upgrade fails to initiate. Makes me leery of Ubuntu, though...maybe I'll go back to Sabayon.

Same problem. Can not run the upgrade.

I've been trying to update my Itanium workstation to Gutsy for quite some time now. I even tried a 'clean' install only to roll back to Feisty. Every time I try to upgrade IA64 to Gutsy, I see following messages:

I have tried multiple locations with the same results. However, I did not

In my case the problem went away by itself after a few days. I just tried to update again after a week or so without changing anything and it worked like a charm. This was on 2 different machines! Unfortunately I've no idea what did the trick. Maybe something was changed on the servers.

downloaded K7.10 ".iso" file and from it created K7.10 'recovery' disc.
After three attempts loaded successfully on my old NEC SL Powermate ES hitherto still running W98SE - RAM 256MB.
Downloaded 130 upgrades (red triangle).
Invited to upgrade again - (different window) - message 'Getting upgrade prerequisite failed- report bug against 'update manager' - include files in /var/log/dist-upgrade.

(As you can see, I'm new to all this!)

I had this problem on a fresh install of 7.04. The problem was that it wanted to use <us.archive.ubuntu.com> regardless of what I set in sources.list. I added the following to /etc/hosts as a workaround:

91.189.88.46 us.archive.ubuntu.com

as per: <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeProblems>

If you are not in the US, just replace the URL with the one you are having problems with.

This points <us.archive.ubuntu.com> to <archive.ubuntu.com> (feel free to double check the IP by running "host archive.ubuntu.com" at the command line or doing what it says in the "UpgradeProblems" URL).

I hope this helps, though I'd like to know where it's getting <us.archive.ubuntu.com> from.

Unfortunately the error message is the same for some different problems. Some outside of the control of update-manager (e.g. if mirrors are not available or if there are network/proxy issues).

For hardy we worked on the robustness of the tool and a lot of the problems should be fixed. One of the issues in update-manager we discovered is that if you have "APT::Get::AllowUnauthenticated" set to true in /etc/apt/apt.conf the upgrade will not work. This is a bug in update-manager and a fix is prepeared in #195419 (thanks to Kolbjørn Barmen for helping finding it). As a workaround for this particular problem, just unset this before the upgrade and then it should work.

now I am tired about microsoft and I want to change), so I really
don't know how to configure linux, nor kubuntu.
So, please, could you tell me WHERE or HOW should I set "false" the
"APT::Get::AllowUnauthenticated", in order to update my adept?? I've
opened Adept manager but there are no clues about this option in the
GUI...maybe should I execute some commands in the terminal?? If yes,
which strings or commands?

I have kubuntu 7.10, I've just installed and I want to update some
programs, like kopete, for example, or install amsn, but since it
doesn't work i'm afraid I cannot do nothing!!

Dear Itsuki,

Linux is some ways is not very different than Windows.

In the instructions given, you are asked to edit a configuration text file.
Text files are easy to edit with the program "gedit"

You can do this is done in a terminal window.

From the menu you will open a terminal window (sort of like the Run cmd
command in Windows)

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

This opens the terminal window to allow you to enter commands.

You have to open the file 'apt.conf' that is located in the directory
/etc/apt/

To do this, enter the command to open the file with the editor program
"gedit" or "kedit" for kubuntu. Substitute kedit for gedit in the following
instructions if you use kedit instead of gedit.

Enter the follow into the terminal window;
sudo gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf

The "sudo' command will allow you to edit the file as the "super user". You
will be asked for your password so that you can be elevated to super user
status for the terminal session.
"gedit" will start the text editor program.
"/etc/apt/apt.conf' will open the file that needs to be edited.

Make the changes and then save the file.

That is all there is to it. It is not complicated. You just have to have
courage and confidence that you can do it. After a while, you will realize
how simple and straight forward this method is.

I have the same error with 7.04. I made sure all the packages are up-to-date, but when I tried to update to 7.10. There's this same error.

And /etc/apt/apt.conf doesn't exist for me. =(

changing the source of my packages eventually solved my problem. Everything is working now.

I guess this isn't the same problem, so i'm posting a separate question as well, but when I attempt to upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 I'm told that several links are broken, e.g.:
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80], among other unfound links (see below).

When I looked at the specified link via browser it gave the same 404 message.

It doesn't seem that this could be due to something systemic on my end, but I'm new to loading Linux, so you never know. (I've used and am very comfortable with Unix in institutional settings, but new to being root.)

Here's the list of (8) complaints I get from Update Manager:

My MAIN FILE from /var/log/dist-upgrade (numerous attempts to finalise updating Feisty and jump to Gutsy ends with that same "nothing" (before end of support 7.04 I did that easy, but unfortunately I lost my system, so after re-installing Feisty I suddenly faced this problem).

I am getting the same error when trying to upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10

The problem seems to be that something in update manager is replacing the file:
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list
(no typo - that is the filename...)
with one that has hardcoded the us.archive.ubuntu.com repo.
and us.archive.ubuntu.com has no longer the 7.04 feisty packages

I have already replaced all in /etc/apt/sources.list with old-releases.ubuntu.com
I even replaced the entry in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list, but update manager replaces that whole file.

so - just speculating - it appears that the fix is to fix that actual package

do-release-upgrade clobbers prerequists-sources.list regardless of permissions. So I mounted /etc/apt/sources.list.d as read only loop device. It didn't work, but it does show where DistUpgradeControler.py starts messing with it.

I don't know enough/any python to fix this, but it sure does seem it would be that tough for such a crucial part of the ubuntu infrastructure. As it is now, once a release goes off archive.ubuntu.com, it can't be network upgraded.

As I noted in bug #337553. Why don't we just fix

with the correct address for feisty in prerequists-sources.list and not need any of the hacky solutions that are out there.

This sounds like you didn't do it right. Copy paste:

Sorry, that's not it. I ran it again, copying (except for the typo in the do-release-upgrade line) the text word for word. Same error message.

I _do_ find it weird that I don't have a prerequists-sources.list file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

Instead, I have a whole bunch of old dapper and edgy repository addresses (inside six or so different files), which could be what's screwing this up (I think maybe do-release-update or ./gutsy is rewriting these addresses with 'feisty' in place of 'dapper' or 'edgy'). I tried deleting them, and editing them by hand, but both of those attempted solutions didn't work.

also, I have sources.list~ and sources.list~~ in the directory as well, and they have deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.... entries as well.

If I could just get my hands on a workable list of contents of /etc/apt/ that contain repository information, I could replace the current files in there, and I bet this would all work, but I don't know where to get such a thing.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Thought I would just attach a copy of the contents of my /etc/apt in case anyone was interested. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

1. Make sure that the /etc/apt/sources.list.d is empty (move files to anywhere else, if needed).

2. Make your /etc/apt/sources.list look like this:

Ubuntu 8.04

During a recent update, several programs are unable to contact Internet servers using DNS names.

Using ping to the internal side of the ADSL router and to the internet servers are OK.

To be able to get new updates from apt-get, I have change in the /etc/apt/sources.list the server name with the IP of the server.
My understanding is that if I get updates, I will get some fixes ;-)

example /etc/apt/sources.list:

@Maurice: if /boot is on its own partition, make sure that it has enough available space too; about 50-60 MB should do IIRC.

I was able to use the steps in comment https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/153980/comments/81, but I had to NOT do the edit in step 5.

It seems like most of the trouble with upgrading an old 7.04 is because of the files being on old-releases.ubuntu.com instead of archive.ubuntu.com now.

Then to continue with the next do-release-upgrade, I had to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to ;

@Joe I'm afraid that the upgrade from feisty has become even more difficult since Apr 18, gutsy's end of life.

Before performing any of the steps below, make sure you have full backups of your current system. Since I haven't tried these new steps, I'm just guessing.

Instead of running do-release-upgrade, you'll have to try this:

sudo -i
mkdir /tmp/upgrade-to-gutsy
cd /tmp/upgrade-to-gutsy
wget http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy/main/dist-upgrader-all/current/gutsy.tar.gz
tar zxf gutsy.tar.gz
./gutsy --help

I'm not sure which should be the best options in your case, but you could try (YMMV):

./gutsy --mode=desktop --frontend=DistUpgradeViewGtk --with-network

The remaining steps would be the same I gave previously.

Hope that helps!

Now, I'm wondering whether it wouldn't be easier to add in /etc/hosts an entry for a.u.c. It should work as long as the URL are preserved:

# temporarily make a.u.c point to old-releases
91.189.88.35 archive.ubuntu.com

This way, do-release-upgrade should work now that both feisty and gutsy are in old-releases. However, upgrading from gutsy to hardy will need the work-around I described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/153980/comments/81 adapted to gutsy/hardy.

BTW, make sure you remove the hosts entry once the upgrade is performed.

As the author of EOLupgrades I can tell you, the procedure is a good as the normal upgrade process when a system is supported.

This seems to have no comments about the originalr problem for more than a year, or duplicates, just discussion about how to deal with a release that has reached its end-of-life. May I suggest the bug is assumed to be fixed?

I can only speak for myself and I don't know if it was fixed or deprecated
or what. I solved my problem by using windows xp instead :)

I think it is safe to close the bug. Don't think many people are running 7.04. I think I received 3 e-mails regarding the 7.04 to 7.10 upgrade and all of them have upgraded successfully.
If problems occur most of them will probably upgrade by doing a fresh install of whatever release they picked, since the upgrade cycle to the most current release is 5 upgrades.. Unless they stay at LTS.

I don't know if there is a more appropriate name available, but Fix Released isn't accurate :)

You're closing it because nobody uses Ubuntu 7.04 anymore, not because the problem was fixed.
