Bug Description

The nvidia drivers don't seem to work at all on my machine and the dual screen configuration doesn't work either... The xrandr extension also doesn't work.

I had this trouble on my fresh installed Ubuntu Gutsy install...

My problem is that I'm not able to configure my pc to a workable configuration... Every boot my system gets stuck in low graphics mode and everytime i configure dual screen (and it actually works, chance 1/100) the right screen has a 1:1 ratio in stead of 4:3 but still running it's native resolution of 1024*768. None of the utilities to configure X seem to work and the drivers just suck. How can this happen to Ubuntu and how can this be fixed?

I think that the bug should be assigned more to package xserver-xorg-video-nv

feest: are you using "nvidia" or "nv" driver? Please attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf if unsure.

In my case the bug is located in nvidia-glx-177.
I use a Sony 46 inch TV to watch movies in dual view.
After log-in into Ubuntu the right resolution is shown on the TV screen for just a second.
Then, the background image becomes smaller but I can still move the move across the whole screen.
But trying to start a movie player (smplayer and vlc tested) leeds to a crash of some gnome applications.
So I cant play movies on the laptop (vostro 1500 with Geforce 8400) or on the tv.

I tried using the 173 driver which resulted in a complete crash of the display, which I had to repair.
Getting back to 177 was quite hard, I had to remove the driver firstr and then use the console to instal it again....

For me this bug is quite critical as I can't watch my movies any more :-((
