Bug Description

Upgrading 14.04.3 to 16.04.

Upgrade hung at installing new version of /etc/gnome/defaults.list

dpkg --configure -a after reboot allowed upgrade to continue.

Further errors encountered with
xterm
xubuntu-core
xubuntu-desktop
resolvconf

Further efforts to fix with dpkg and apt-get left machine with

Tried again using 32bit arch instead.

Crashed at same position - totally hung - unable to run ubuntu-bug from the vbox instance.

Apttermlog indicates a problem installing libutempter0.

This also occurs when upgrading Ubuntu to version 15.10 via Distribution upgrade.
The installation gets to "Installed libparted2 (amd64)" and sits there at:
"installing new version of config file /etc/gnome/defaults.list ..."

Running Virtual machine on Hypervisor on Windows 10 1511.
