For triaging this bug, we would need a logfile of the upgrade.

Most probably some add-on package caused this crash. It is impossible to detect the culprit with the given information.

There seem to be several bugs already reported concerning problems with emacs upgrades, so rather than start a new one, I've just chosen this one to add to. I have a fresh Gutsy x86 install. Everything went well. But on a recent dist-upgrade emacs, jde, and ecb now have problems... Please see attached.

yes, a new emacs will recompile all add-on packages for the new emacs version. the reports you've noticed (and this is another one) are actually bugs in the add-on packages, and not necessarily in emacs22 itself.

we need the install log of the original reporter. Your install log indicates a problem in jde. Can you reproduce the problem if you purge (dpkg --purge jde) before installing emacs22? If yes, please file a new bug against jde.

if I purge jde, then emacs updates itself correctly. and then i can
aptitude install jde. however, i need to swap the first two lines in
/usr/share/doc-base/jde so that "Document:" is first. but i had
already corrected this problem, and this is not the cause of my report
below. i'm a little confused as i've seen this happen a couple of
times in the past. i think i even had a problem with "aptitude install
emacs21 gnus" once. where this had to be done in two separate calls to
aptitude, first to install emacs21, and then gnus.

I think there is a problem in speedbar:

I was getting emacs22 byte-compilation errors as described above
but the /tmp/emacs.XXXX files seemed to point to the speedbar package.
I tried to byte compile the files in /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/speedbar
by hand, and succeeded after adding the directory to load-path. However,
the emacs22 setup was still failing at the same place.

So I did

        dpkg --purge jde
        dpkg --purge speedbar
        dpkg --purge semantic
        dpkg --purge eieio
        dpkg --purge cedet-common

(the purge did not touch /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/speedbar, perhaps
because I had byte-compiled some files in there by hand, so I removed
the directory manually). The emacs22 setup then went through fine.

I then tried to reinstall jde which depends on speedbar, semantic, eieio
and possibly some others. I get the following errors:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I am not the original poster (at least I don't think I am the original poster: I added the note about speedbar
being the culprit). Be that as it may, I no longer have this problem: I'm running 8.04 on all my machines,
I now tend to install from scratch, rather than upgrade, and finally I run emacs 23, built from the CVS emacs
sources. I doubt this helps you very much but it's the best I can do.

hello,

unfortunately I don't really have an Ubuntu system anymore and I
cannot take the time to install one now.
Besides I am not even sure I could reproduce a similar installation.

Anyway, if I come around installing Ubuntu again in a near future, I'd
update my launchpad status.

Regards,
