laptop screen comes back on after closing lid

Bug Description

in Ubuntu 7.10
Laptop : Dell Inspiron 6400

when the laptop screen is closed it is switched off and soon it gets back on again.

I don't think it is a hardware problem because everything works well under Microsoft Windows.

the problem still exists with ubuntu 8.04 besides that after opening the screen again it flickers for a while.

this problem was solved temporarily in 8.10.
everything was ok with beta live CD, release live CD and Intrepid fresh installation.
but after downloading some updates, the problem appeared again!!
I can not determine exactly which update causes this problem again.

Thanks for providing the info, can you just confirm...the laptop screen goes off when you close the lid and then comes back on again while its still closed? Is that correct? Thank you.

yes this is what happens exactly, besides that a small flicker happens when I open lid again.
