Update manager fails to properly detect the version

Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I updated for the new distribution version couple of days ago using the the version upgrade utility. But now every day when I fetch and update, it says that there is a new distribution version available. When I try to update to the new distribution version it says I already has the latest version.

was surprised to have to update 7.10 version as I just installed it two days ago.
And the update was not successful

try linux mint, same 7.10 version, but all the media fun parts included
..and no problems for software updates
