.desktop files not displayed as icons - just as text files

Bug Description

I am using Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon AMD64. I do not know how it came but since yesterday all starters at the desktop are not displayed as icons but as .desktop text files which they in reality are. at the same time some apps related to files e.g. OpenOffice with .ods files do not start anymore when I click the file. I guess this is related to mime but I did not find anything. Maybe its not a bug but misconfiguration but I do not know where to search a solution.

Me again - this seems to be a GNOME-problem only. I tried with konqueror and there where no problems.
