Bug Description

Binary package hint: amarok

After upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy on my dual opteron AMD64 system, Amarok can't play MP3s (using the Xine engine). I have mediabuntu in my repositories.

Amarok offered to install the required packages which I accepted, though I thought I already had everything I needed. I had already done "sudo apt-get install libxine-extracodecs" which I thought would work. I accepted Amarok's offer and some dialog boxes appeared that looked like adept running so quickly that it was pretty clear that nothing was actually happening. Then Amarok said it needed to be restarted to play MP3s. So I restarted.

After restarting Amarok, the symptoms were unchanged. I even let it try to install the packages again, but still MP3s couldn't play. I could play MP3s with juk, however.

Finally, I enabled the "universe" repository and ran "sudo apt-get install libxine1-ffmpeg libxine1-plugins ffmpeg lame faad sox" which installed a bunch of things:
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libfaad2-0 libpostproc1d libxine1-console libxine1-gnome
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  faad libfaad2-0 libpostproc1d libxine1-console libxine1-ffmpeg
  libxine1-gnome libxine1-plugins
The following packages will be upgraded:
  sox

I don't know which one did the trick, but now Amarok can play.

So my problem is resolved, but the bug are:
1. After an upgrade Amarok should be able to play MP3s, since mediabuntu was enabled, but it was not able to do so.
2. If Amarok installs the MP3 codecs, it should be able to play MP3s.
3. I shouldn't have to run code from universe to play MP3s.

I have the same problem.
i have installed the packages Michael suggests and it does not work for me.
I don't know when it exactly stops working.
I made my dist-upgrade form gutsy and amarok played my mp3 but 1 week ago it doesn't.
I don't remember exactly the upgraded packages that broke this.
I think it is an important bug.

PD: I have medibuntu sources enabled.

I installed all codecs and _also_ amarok-xine since it depends on it, but neither mp3 nor streaming worked.
Then I installed xine and I could hear both mp3 and streaming.

It is then possible that this is a bug of amarok-xine which depends in some way on xine.

Part of this sounds like bug 187406 which was recently fixed in Hardy. Could you test on hardy whether the mp3 support installer works for you?

"I shouldn't have to run code from universe to play MP3s." This part is a non-bug. MP3 support can't be shipped in main for patent reasons.

Nope this is probably not releated to bug 187406 since that was a problem in hardy only.
What version of Amarok are you using?

I disagree that "I shouldn't have to run code from universe to play MP3s." is a non-bug. If you look at my solution, it had nothing to do with universe. In fact, I don't believe that universe is supposed to ship MP3 playing software, either, for the exact same patent reasons. I thought that medibuntu is where all the patent encumbered software was kept.

It is expected that I should have to use medibuntu, but that didn't work. I have to use universe which should not be needed.

Can someone please state the actual problem here?
I am a bit confused by the different issues that seem to appear here.

There are several issues.
1) The main problem is that Amarok claims to know how to enable MP3's, but after it executes the required apt-get command it still can't play them. There is some magic combination of debs to install and then it works, but no one can agree on what those debs are.
2) Ugrading a working Amarok disabled mp3 playing. Medibuntu was enabled during the upgrade.
3) If universe is required for mp3 playing, then Amarok should notify the user. My understanding is that only medibuntu should be needed, but either way there is a problem.

Unfortunately I have mp3s working now, so I can't reproduce the original problem.
