Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

With visual effects set to 'normal' I have a problem with the screensaver. This happens with both the default screensaver and with xscreensaver.

My machine is on overnight. When I try to use it first thing in the morning, it takes a long time after pressing a key for the screen to be unblanked. I would estimate this takes nearly a minute. During this time one of my CPUs is 100% utilised.

The strange thing is that this only happens after an overnight period of inactivity. If I haven't used the machine during the day the screen has (so far) always been restored quite quickly (2 or 3 seconds).

If I set visual effects to 'none' the problem goes away.

Ubuntu 7.10, amd64 X2, Asus M2N-E, 2GB, nVidia GeForce 7600GS with nvidia driver.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Sounds like an overnight cron job is pushing everything into swap and then when you try to use the system it has to load it back into RAM.

Thanks for the response. I do not have an overnight cron job and I can
re-create this problem at will simply by locking the screen ("Lock Screen"
choice), waiting, and then attempting to unlock the screen.

Sincerely,
Ray Walker

With the latest updates I am still experiencing this issue.

With Visual Effects set to Normal or Extra the screen saver is excruciatingly slow, and gets slower the longer it is running.

With Visual Effects set to none, screen saver works as expected.

This problem went away for me after upgrading the video card from a 64MB GeForce4 MX 4000 (Nvidia) to a 256MB GeForce 6200. All screen savers and previews now work whereas before some would hang the box.
