Sound device autodetect does not work on nForce2

I hooked up some headphones, and autodetect seems to enable that but not the digital out. I assume that's a bug. as other OSes (such as Windows) output over both by default so that no custom setup is wasted on basic stuff like that.

Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . Please note that Alpha3 will be released within the next day or two so you many want to wait. You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. I'm now using Alpha 4, and nothing's changed. Was something supposed to have been fixed?

I'd also like to add that there's no sound prefs to set what ALSA uses for output which is a bit of a shame. Is there a bug open for that?

+1 I am also having this issue on an A7N8X motherboard which uses nForce2 for it's sound chipset.

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. Does this issue still exist in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release? If so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

This has not been an issue for me in Hardy. It was only an issue in the development stage.

Given the most recent feedback from komputes I'm closing this bug. Additionally, against linux-source-2.6.22 this will be closed as well since the 2.6.22 Gutsy kernel has reached it's end of life - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.10-eol . Thanks.
