kmenuedit does not change menu on edit and save

Bug Description

kmenuedit stopped impacting menu structure after gnome-desktop package was
installed on Kubuntu 5,4 hoary.

Removing gnome and gnome-menus did not help. menu-xdg is still installed (I will
try to remove it and report later).

The new settings do get into the ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu
file. However, this does not impact the menu.

I created another user on my system, and this problem does not impact that new
user (created after removal of gnome and gnome-menus). Things get saved there
and are displayed.

I guess this is Ubuntu related, but I have also posted in to KDE bugreports:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=102349

See my comments at the end of that bug report.

Could this also be related to xdg-menus bug:
~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu
?

menu-xdg does not uninstall without removing the whole of KDE... Any ideas?

Maybe someone could just explain, how the KDE menu system works? Maybe I just
have to clean some config files of kmenuedit or kicker to restart the whole
system? It is really annoying, please help!

Menu editing works for me. What happens when you rm -r ~/.config and ~/.local?

Nothin happens. I just moved both folders from another account and logged into the old. I still cannot edit
the menu and it contains a lot of apps that are no longer installed (since I uninstalled Gnome).

I would like to be able to install Gnome without messing up my menu. does it work for you with both kde and
gnome installed?

This is still an issue with Breezy Preview Release as of now; Sept. 17, 2005. I assume this is a kde 3.4 bug, since
other bugs.kde.org mentions other distros with the same problem.

Found temporary solution (only tested on Kubuntu Breezy Preview release). After installing a program or editing the
menu, run "sudo kbuildsycoca". Now the menu will be updated.

I suspect this is an inotify issue, same as Gnome is experiencing.

I have the exact same problem with Kubuntu 5.10 and your workaround works great
at refreshing the KMenu.

Is this bug being worked on? It is quite annoying, specially if someone tries to
install new programs all the time.

Okay, this is some sort of config file problem. I've yet to find out which config file, and where the problem is, but it's not a problem with a new .kde/ (i deleted mine by accident)

Also, running kappfinder seems to fix it (you have to install it first) as it runs kbuildsycoca
