Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

There are things not wanted to be updated. Especially some large updates in case of expensive traffic.
Thus it would be good idea to allow user to hide non-critical updates

Such feature is implemented for example in m$ windows updater

This seems like a very sound idea for LTS releases.

Basing the "critical"/"urgent"/"important" updates on CVEs or similar could be one way of implementation.

I am not running the update-manager nor a GUI. I need the "apt-get upgrade" to work on critical updates only for our servers.

Therefore, I am not sure if this is really a duplicate...

The matter is not only in priority of updates. For example I may want to prohibit updates of OpenOffice - in such case OpenOffice updates should be ignored even when all updates are configured for automatic installation

Blocking updates permanently (or at least, until the next Ubuntu version) is bug 90105.

With the current release, updates are categorized as Recommended, Security, Optional, etc, and you can select/deselect all updates in the categories. As mpt has mentioned, permanently ignoring an update is tracked in bug #90105, so what else needs to be done to get this fixed?
