Social networking links from bib record

Noting after some searching of Twitter that at least one other (non-Evergreen) library, some patrons also actively tweet out public lists they've created, so that might be another place to add share buttons.

I do think we should avoid any approaches that require loading JavaScript or images from a social media site; that would turn the share links from a voluntary action to potential involuntary surveillance of patron's catalog use. This is just a note of caution; I don't know of any major social media sites that require that for a simple share function.

I looked into the sharing methods in a little more detail for the above-mentioned social networking sites. Although all try hard to get people to use their javascript, they all offer a method to share through a simple link. The problem is with the use of branded icons from Facebook and Pinterest. I've read through their guidelines, and in both cases, the use of their icons requires that the web site use the image to link to a Facebook business page or a Pinterest for Business URL. I don't see any language regarding the use of a Facebook Share or Pinterest Save button on a web site, outside of using images loaded from the site. The Twitter guidelines do allow for the use of its icon to share content.

I've seen examples where the share links do not use the icons, but use text styled to look like buttons using colors associated with each of the social networking sites. This seems to work well, but it would change the shape of the buttons in such a way that they wouldn't look good under the current print and email options.

At the moment, I'm thinking it might be best to use a simple share icon that, when clicked, displays the button-like text links. Otherwise, I worry about cluttering up the interface.

+1 to Kathy's suggestion of hiding all the button-like text links behind a single icon. In cases where a library has enabled only one network to display (e.g. they've only turned on Pinterest), perhaps then it could present the button-like text link directly, rather than hiding it?

I'm good starting with Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Before too long, it would also be nice to include QZone and VKontakte so that Evergreen users in more countries find their popular social networks represented.

I'll leave the code here in hopes that somebody can finish what I started!

I notice that Jane's link had public domain icons that can be used for linking to the social networking sites. Perhaps we can use those instead? I also was planning to add a config.tt2 setting for displaying the links.
