Is this with Hoary or Breezy? Have you tested with the lastest Breezy?

Is Hoary. I fixed this one with this esd config:

[esd]
auto_spawn=1
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2
spawn_wait_ms=100
# default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode
default_options=

Now it seems to be working for me.

This is because esd uses up /dev/dsp, and realplayer is trying to use OSS direct.

realplayer should probably be made ot use alsa if it supports it

This problem still seems to be present in the latest Dapper: no sound with realplayer, but after killing esd sound works fine. Is this supposed to be fixed?

I can't reproduce this on a freshly installed dapper. With a running esd realplay plays fine.

This still happens with edgy - realplayer is still duff in gnome, but functioning fine in kde.

Since Dapper, esd releases the audio device after 1 idle second. (If you've changed this, you're on your own.)

Inserting a newer version of realplay with alsa support into dapper-commercial (not realplayer, which is this package, in multiverse!) would resolve this issue once and for all.
