Bug Description

An important factor in staying consistent with the overall aesthetics of the ubuntu design language would be to disable the use of the noise texture on gdm to provide a seamless transition from the plymouth boot splash onto the gdm login. Here is the override provided to fix the inconsistency in ubuntu.css under the gnome-shell themes directory:

#lockDialogGroup {
  background: #2c001e !important;
}

The noise was kept there on purpose. Indeed we tried the aubergine background without it, and it looked really garlish, this is the reason why we decided to keep it. However, we will probably iterate over the design in the coming cycle.

(Note: the issue with not applying the noise was on reading the user names in particular in the GDM screen)

Although to avoid too much debate on personal design preferences I've assigned it to ubuntu-ux (Canonical design team). Hopefully they will have some time this cycle to assess the current theme.

"Won't Fix" unfortunately.

Not because 17.10 is past EOL, but because the decision was taken to use a gradient as the background starting in 18.10. This at least means this bug title is now out of date.
