When the system is in this state I also remark that the screensaver when it is activated is very very slow

I have exactly the same problem,
Using compiz fusion with Ubuntu gusty and the proprietary Nvidia driver (GeForce 8400M GS).
I have noticed that the problem arise more frequently when I use two screen.

This is a bug in the nvidia driver that is well known. Can't remember the bug number right now but we do know about this (and we can't fix it).

Changed in compiz:
status: New → Invalid

I put this in the gnome session an it seems to fixe the problem

compiz --replace --loose-binding compiz --replace --indirect-rendering

I think --indirect-rendering is the option that fixes the problem since it forces
Compiz to not access directly to the graphical card

Yes, --indirect-rendering does help a small group of people. The drivers in hardy have a proper fix from nvidia.
