notebook got stuck on applying screensaver

Bug Description

Ubuntu 7.10.
started with applying screen saver.system got stuck.no key was working.fan started running at max speed.
had to press and hold the power button and then restart.
on resart the fan again started running at max speed.
login music didnt play.movies or mp3 didnt play the sound track.
crshed again on trying to apply screensaver.
happened 3/4 times.
