Bug Description

Ubuntu 20.04 daily - verified (check disc for defects) prior to boot.
dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

On booting, the 20.04 daily has no background when desktop is loaded? (ie. top panel is there, dock on left side on black screen)

When changing background (to any already installed), they are warped when selected and made the bacground as if corrupted (but small image where selection is made looks valid).

This issue may relate to video card [radeon]

or system in main report, no background on boot?

i rebooted & same. Changing wallpapers works for some, but creates a visual mess for others

We believe that this issue has been fixed with the Beta release of Ubuntu 20.04. Could you please confirm that the background is no longer black / missing? Thanks in advance!

Sorry

Booted latest daily (03-Apr-2020) 'live' qa-test and on
dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

and whilst I like the 'smooth' bootup messages, it ends up booting to a black screen without wallpaper (wallpapers was visible in background during try/boot, and changing wallpapers/backgrounds has the same effect as described so I won't add another screendump (see comment #4 for what my current screen looks like)

I just noticed I have another box with the same `lshw` reported video card so I'll endeavour to use the 'live' on that & other similar boxes later today.

Changing wallpapers and on occasion the wallpaper would show correctly, change it again sometimes it could get two change twice in a row without glitches, then back to jarry-blocky mess for part of image on next change (and usually 3-5 after that).

See #4 for pic; though % of jarry-block image and location varies, up to 80% of screen jarry-blocky but not always top of screen; can be lower portion, or top & bottom but not middle... it's not consistent though more commonly not right at top

Reboot of same box as #6; same ISO.

I have wallpaper visible this time, but tiny glitches visible at the top in what could be top-panel or wallpaper. As mostly dark it looks like glitch is with top-panel, but if I make this firefox window full screen the glitch is hidden thus part of wallpaper most likely

Screengrab uploaded of what I'm seeing this time.

To ensure screengrab showed issue, I viewed it in eye-of-gnome; I'm getting glitches on the screen as I press <F11> in eye-of-gnome to view fullscreen; most (if not all) on screen glitches are occuring at top of screen or top-panel, but that could be where easy to notice them.. It's not just that program as I get same on screen glitches with firefox now.

I ran a QA-test on (2020-Apr-03 ubu 20.04 desktop amd64)
dell [optiplex] 745 (c2d-6600, 6gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
because lshw reports same video card, no glitches there with wallpaper on boot, nor changing wallpaper.

--- possibly unrelated
I did have that box boot the first time to "Oh No, something went wrong" and want me to logout, to get itself stuck in a loop.. I scanned dmesg and no squashfs errs, thought about filing then rebooted to see if it occurred again and nope.

Ubuntu groovy daily (2020-08-28) QA-test on initial reporting box

dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

It booted to no wallpaper

On changing wallpaper, the images are corrupted, block-low-signal tv type blocky/corrupted images.

On occasion the selection of an image will be drawn as background perfectly, but select another (corrupted), return to the one that was perfect before and now it'll be corrupted. Corruption isn't consistent, at times it's minor, other times the images is unrecognizable.

The images in the background window (where you select another image) are drawn perfectly...

Ubuntu groovy daily 2020-10-14 (QA-test live) on
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

glitches are evident on wallpaper, but not always when it's changed, switch between two photos & 3 of 4 selects will have it glitched, 1 will not, glitches will also be different each time

example of glitch is https://photos.app.goo.gl/yZoN34kFBM4UaLh7A

I only saw glitches evident on wallpaper itself (background of desktop), NOT on any window opened, so effect is ~minor.

Booted today's hirsute daily (live QA-test) on
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

and noticed the wallpaper had glitches on it.
On changing wallpaper, I sometimes end up with
- a black screen (ie. no wallpaper),
- part of the wallpaper looking good, other parts glitchy/blocky bad TV signal, blue-yellow squarish blotches, but it varies
- expected wallpaper looks perfect

There were glitches top left & below the panel on boot, but they've since gone (no wallpaper currently though one is selected).

Operation of system is unaffected, and no glitches have appeared on windows.

Booted today's impish daily (live QA-test) on
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

On initial boot there were glitches on the top of the display (panel & top of wallpaper below panel). It booted with wallpaper (not no wallpaper today so not identical).

On changing wallpaper I get either
- correct wallpaper
- glitchy version (blocky bad-digital-reception type) of wallpaper some of which looks, parts do not
- no background
- magnified version of wallpaper so only part visible (current image is like it's 1/8th of chosen 'hippo' wallpaper instead of all of it... part of image though is warped

choosing the same wallpaper does NOT mean you get the same result the next time though

- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

Identical result to comment #13

booted with wallpaper shown, however glitches on top though. On changing it, I get
- no background (usually blocks on small parts of screen)
- glitched background (varying amount looks good)
- correct wallpaper (took ~15 changes to achieve a perfect wallpaper though)

it doesn't repeat though; you'll get different results each time a wallpaper is selected and it's unpredictable.

summary: - ubuntu 20.04 daily boots with no background, selecting other background
- has warped picture
+ ubuntu 20.04 daily boots with no (or warped) background, selecting other

Ubuntu impish desktop live QA-test of
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

at the try/install query (maybe-ubiquity) I get video glitches at top of wallpaper

changing wallpaper gets black background or glitchy-wallpaper (varying each time) - ignoring that for now

VIDEO GLITCHES on wallpaper are actually appearing on the workspaces display (may not be gnome terminology sorry); which I did not expect (has it done that before? I've forgotten?).. in fact they're on the screenshots?? Looking at bug report they've occurred before; maybe it's just me not testing gnome very often (or not on this old slow box)

Ubuntu jammy daily ISO (canary) used in LIVE mode on same box
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)

machine operates perfectly though. Background today was only BLACK (no wallpaper), none showed with 6 attempts to change, but all BLACK is possibly better than glitchy/warped.

The bug today could be described as incapable of changing wallpaper on box. I'm doing boot tests today & will very on next boot that I can change wallpaper (ie. I believe related to video card)
