Is this still an issue with Ubuntu 8.04 or Intrepid, the current development version?

yes :-(

thou, i use ALT + left mouse click to move around the dialogue.
(it is my father's computer and he was unable to use it, until i showed him howto)

you should probably make sure (some how) that all system dialogues are fully
visible in 800x600 mode too, since their are MANY of those out there ;-)
i work in many (50) schools and they have old monitors that are unable to go 1024x768 :-(
very very sad/bad situation !!! ok, i stop winning :-)

Can you define the boundaries for 'small-screen' then? To me, 1280x1024 is a small screen

i think... 800x600 - both, upper and bottom panels ?
(since, it will not overlap them)

we (in the educational system) have many system with old 800x600 desktops

btw, is it possible to zoom in and out a window ?
or a window's content ?
that could be great :-)

problem confirmed on jaunty.
My screen is 1024x600.

gdm 2.20.9-0ubuntu1

The only way to reach buttons is to drag the window with "Alt+Left button".

Still an issue with the current version of Jaunty, (9.04, beta release) on a netbook (1024x768) with the jaunty netbook remix.

This version also released with window clamping enabled, so I can not move the window "above" the top of the screen, it is thus impossible to correctly click the buttons in gdmsetup.

I just ran into this running UNR Jaunty on a netbook with a 1024x576 screen which seems to be the resolution most of the smaller netbooks are shipping with now. I think if we chose this resolution as our smallest target, we'd be in good shape.

I think this would be a great papercut to fix. 800x600 feels like the right resolution to target.

redesigning dialogs to have a different geometry requires real changes and maybe a new design it's not a quick change and not really an hundredpapercut issue, the dialog is also not used in the new gdm which will land soon in karmic

This is not invalid.

Have you ever heard of scrollable regions?!?!?!?!? Just make the control blocks within the tabs into scrollable regions, then if the height is too low for it to be able to fit them all there, it makes it scrollable. This lets the users be able to see the bottom of the window, even if it is scrollable. This is a papercut. Changing the type of container for a set of controls is not a big task.

And if GTK does not have a scrollable container, then Windows API just owned GTK. So, you're not helping your own cause if you continue to whine about how big of a task this is.

All that has to be done is change the containers within the tabs from a standard container type into a scrollable container type. This is doing a "Search and Replace" on a variable type and hitting recompile.

What is that supposed to mean? That they are doing a complete redesign of the dialog? Definitely a bigger undertaking than the papercut written here.

@Josh Leverette:
Pls stop re-validating papercuts!
This is not a papercut because ,the gdm is being changed in 9.10.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut
