Bug Description
Binary package hint: kde4
Occasionally, while running a KDE 4.0 session and surfing the net with Firefox, my screen will flash (blink off & back on) and will stop responding to everything except the mouse cursor and keyboard; the only way to unfreeze it is to restart KDM from a terminal screen (sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart). There seems to be no consistency, it will just randomly freeze.
I'm currently running the 64-bit version of Kubuntu Hardy Alpha4, but have the same problem in the 64-bit version of Kubuntu Gutsy. Currently, I'm on a Gateway NX860XL laptop, with an Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS GPU, Nvidia's 169.09 driver (installed from the repos in Hardy, but with Envy in Gutsy), and an Intel Core2 Duo T7200 processor.
In case it is of any use, I do have the KDE 4 desktop effects enabled (this isn't the only problem I've had concerning video with Firefox on KDE 4.0, so I'm thinking it might have something to do with the compositing engine ???).
I don't use Firefox all that much, so I haven't seen this issue. Does it still happen to you and if so is there anything specific you can think of that may cause it to occur? How long are you surfing when you notice it? I ran Firefox Beta 3 today for about an hour doing online banking and bill paying and never once had a problem.
