I should be able to reproduce this, but don't have a dvd handy at the moment, will try later.

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the -intel driver. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to test the new -intel driver using the LiveCD or just upgrade your Hardy installation. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
Thanks.

As can be seen in the original report (DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04), this was tested on Hardy.

I have not been able to reproduce this crash since, but I did (separately) experience a complete system freeze (unable to get a log) when starting DVD playback.

Unfortunately, neither this nor the original problem are straightforward to reproduce, and most of the time, DVD playback works fine.

I guess we can close the bug report according to your comment. Maybe it is a hardware issue if the whole system gets stuck.
Feel free to open it again if it still happens with current Hardy.

unggnu, let's leave this one open. While we don't have enough info to reproduce this issue easily, we've seen a large number of (possibly related) totem bug reports, and this may provide a valuable data point.

Matt, last month I put in a patch for 965GM to fix several issues when using Compiz on 965 (the "greedy heuristic" patch), which resolved half a dozen different problems, one of which involved DVD playback under Xv. So, while that symptom differs from what you described, it's not a bad guess that the reason you stopped seeing it was due to this change. However, we're also seeing other various Totem errors with crashing X, that does sound more similar to this, so it warrants further investigation. It would be useful to know if you experience this crash again, as it'd rule out the possibility of the greedy heuristic patch having fixed it.

I just got a crash with a similar backtrace. I opened an ogg video which was placed on my Desktop with totem-gstreamer, though. The video was http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2008/fosdem/ogg_theora/720x576/netconf_-_design_and_overview___Martin_Krafft.ogg, in case that helps.

This is a X3100 on an Intel Core 2 Duo, with a Hardy up-to-date.

I'm attaching the Xorg log.

I'm also having total system freeze when reading a DVD in xine. Using via driver in hardy.

Different driver, different symptoms. Please file a separate bug.

I am having the exact same problem, on Gutsy. Whenever I try to view any video content, the X server crashes. Tried it with Xine and mplayer, both the same result. The Xorg.0.log file ends with this:

Reproducing it is extremely easy: I just try to watch a video (in this case an AVI). I am using fglrx driver, installed with Envy, version 8.40.4. If you need any other info, just e-mail me.

Note that I (the original reporter) have not been able to reproduce this
problem since the first occurrence, though others seem to be.

Could someone able to reproduce this issue please follow the steps at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing to obtain a full backtrace on the issue? I've not been able to reproduce it on either of my 965GM systems; are there any special steps involved in reproducing it?

Hmm, well I guess we can close it as fixed. But if anyone does encounter it again and can reproduce it and get a backtrace, please reopen with the additional details.
