hildon uses non-standard gettext/i18n

Bug Description

Binary package hint: hildon-desktop

hildon packages do not use standard gettext for user interface string internationalization (i18n). While some code appears to be set up for internationalization, msgid strings are non-meaningful identifiers and therefore represent an obstacle to translation since one cannot determine the intended meaning.

Could you forward this to hildon-desktop upstream? I don't see a point in Ubuntu diverging from upstream on this as it would mean hundreds of lines of differences between our trees, so either it's fixed upstream or we'll have to live with it (or fork hildon-desktop forever, but we don't want to do this I guess).

To forward upstream: file an upstream request and link the URL to the upstream bug report via the "Also affects" Launchpad link.

Not that we want to, but wouldn't another option be for us to fix it and submit patch to upstream? We might need to get it done for the customer before upstream would consider doing it.

I emailed <email address hidden> to raising the issue of non-meaningful strings in code and how they inhibit translation and may be non-standard GNU gettext. I don't think there is a public bug system for Hildon now, so I can't link this bug to any upstream bug. I also raised the question of whether Hildon packages should be set up for intltool.
