Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Jus finished installing 8.08, package restarted the machine. The crash report message was displayed after I logged into ubuntu. Happens everytime I boot. I only have 3 days experience with ubuntu but it appears to me that the version of gnome that I get is the "failsafe" version - low graphics, using generic driver for my ATI Radeon 9250 card. This is exactly the reason I tried upgrading to 8.08 from 7.10, previous version wouldn't load correctly. I have a Sony Triniton tv connected to the ATI card as my only monitor, but I also have an intergrated SiS 600 ((i think) with nothing connected to it.

As I said, I'm not too familiar with ubuntu yet. but I am a Software Tester by trade so I'd be happy to do what I can to help resolve the issue. Please let me know what other info is needed.

Thank you for reporting this bug. Could you let us know what theme it occurs with? (This is the output of "gconftool -g /apps/metacity/general/theme".)

I removed ubuntu from my machine and reinstalled windows since reporting
this bug. I'm sorry but I don't think I can help anymore.

Thomas, I can verify that it happened for me with the default theme. I cannot verify that it's the same error. On a clean install of Hardy (both beta and alpha 6), opening the theme manager (settings - prefs - appearance) caused a crash window to open when trying to change the theme. I don't recall what theme I chose at that time. Closing the crash report window did not cause the theme manager to close. It continued working despite the crash report. I've seen this several times now on several machines. To date, I've installed hardy beta on 3 different computers and all of them exhibited the same type of problem. It did not, however, cause any usability issues on any of them - at least none that I've noticed yet. I will try and pay attention next time it happens but on at least one machine I think I check the "don't warn about future problems" option so I may not see it again.

Thank you for your help raising this, anyway.

This isn't really a Metacity problem. gnome_theme_meta_info_compare() is a function in libtheme.

a user since I reported this issue.
