Bug Description

With a fresh Ubuntu Hardy install on an Inspiron 1420, audio does not work through the speakers. The user has to open up the mixers and unmute the mixers that are muted by default (Surround is the one causing the issue).

On an upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy, unmuting the mixers does not resolve the issue.

Sound does however work from a headphone jack immediately after installation.

Particularly: one of the headphone jacks gets mapped over to "Front", while the other headphone jack and the speakers are mapped to "Surround". Due to the policy changes with ALSA, this comes up as muted by default.

This issue can be resolved by modifying the existing quirk used for Dell laptops.

Same problem on my laptop clevo M72R intel ich8 as been working perfectly both on gutsy and hardy until the latest upgrade to alpha 6.
Now audio works only trough headphones and no matter what i do with alsa mixer or pulse audio no sound comes from speakers.

Tommaso,

Please open a different bug for that issue. This was a very hardware specific fix that was added.

I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1420 from Gutsy to Hardy today, and am experiencing the bug described here. I'm not getting any sound from the speakers, but one of the headphone jacks does work. Everything in alsamixer is unmuted and turned up.

Jose -
The issue described in that link does not appear to be the same problem I have. I do not have the file "snd-hda-intel.ko.REPLACEDBYhsfmodem" that they reference, and I can get sound from the headphone jack, just not the main speakers.
